QI Practitioner Programme

This dynamic four-module programme, delivered over four to six months, is designed for clinical and operational staff to learn how to lead quality improvement.

Bringing together key principles about leading change, human factors, and quality improvement, this course offers a powerful and unique set of tools tailored for NHS improvement leaders. Participants will gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead impactful quality improvement initiatives, ensuring services are efficient, effective, and centred around delivering the best possible patient care and experience.

Content

Throughout the programme, delegates will have the opportunity to develop and share expertise with peers while gaining hands-on experience with proven quality improvement methodologies. The course will also explore strategies for leading change, influencing stakeholders, and engaging with patients, service users, and carers.

Each module is designed to equip participants with practical insights and innovative approaches to drive meaningful improvements in healthcare services. By the end of the programme, individuals will be empowered to lead change, improve quality, and make a lasting impact on patient outcomes.

Module 1: Introducing QI and Getting Started

  • What is Quality Improvement, and why does it matter?
  • Introduction to the Model for Improvement and building a strong case for change.
  • Analysing system performance to ensure the right problems are addressed.
  • Understanding patient, carer, and service user needs to drive meaningful improvement.

Module 2: Measuring for Improvement and Implementing Change

  • Check in and progress updates.
  • Demonstrating theory of change using Driver Diagrams.
  • The 7-steps measurement process.
  • Working with teams to bring about change.

Module 3: Helping Teams Change

  • Check in and progress updates.
  • Presenting data effectively using run charts.
  • Engaging and guiding people through change.
  • Applying the Model for Improvement with structured PDSA cycles for small scale testing.

Module 4: Thinking Differently and Sustaining Improvement

  • Encouraging creativity to inspire continuous improvement.
  • Building reliable and sustainable systems.
  • Sharing successes and overcoming challenges.
  • Recognition with certificates of completion.
