Quality management systems for leaders

Quality Management Systems for Leaders is a practical development programme designed to build senior and operational leaders’ understanding of what a QMS is, how it functions in an NHS context, and what behaviours, routines and structures are required to make it real in everyday practice.

Grounded in the NHS IMPACT framework and real-world examples from across UK providers, the programme builds leaders’ capability to translate strategy into daily operational practice, strengthen alignment and create the conditions in which improvement and assurance systems work together effectively.

Leaders learn how a QMS integrates quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement, and how to build a culture where teams understand their purpose, act on priorities and continuously learn.

Session outcomes

  • Establish a shared understanding of what a Quality Management System (QMS) is in an NHS provider context, why it matters, and how it differs from isolated improvement activity or standalone assurance processes.
  • Translate organisational strategy into clear team-level objectives through effective strategy deployment.
  • Practise using cascade tools and real organisational examples to align aims, measures and priorities, ensuring teams understand what matters and why.
  • Explore the daily routines and behaviours that support reliable service delivery, including standard work, visual management, performance conversations and psychological safety.
  • Strengthen leaders’ ability to help teams understand performance in real time, surface issues early and respond to variation without unnecessary escalation.
  • Build confidence in using data, audits and feedback meaningfully while maintaining clear accountability across teams, services and divisions.
  • Use tools such as TRIZ to identify behaviours or practices that unintentionally hinder improvement, and clarify what needs to stop, start or shift for a QMS to thrive.

Who should attend this session?

This programme is aimed at senior and operational leaders responsible for translating strategy into day-to-day delivery. This includes Directors, Deputies and Divisional leaders, operational managers, quality and governance leads, clinical leaders with service oversight, and others responsible for aligning organisational priorities with frontline practice.

What benefits can you expect?

  • Clearer alignment between strategy and daily work - Leaders learn to cascade priorities effectively and reduce “strategy drift”.
  • More reliable, consistent service delivery - Daily management practices help teams understand performance and act quickly where performance falls below agreed standards.
  • Stronger, more confident leadership at every level - Leaders apply practical behaviours that enable focus, empowerment and learning.
  • Assurance that strengthens improvement - Oversight becomes clearer, more coherent and more valuable.
  • A culture where learning and improvement are part of everyday practice - Teams are supported to raise issues, test changes and embed what works.
