Quality improvement for leaders

This practical one-day workshop is designed to equip senior and operational leaders with the understanding, behaviours and tools needed to create the conditions in which quality improvement (QI) can thrive.

Grounded in real NHS experience and aligned with NHS IMPACT principles, the workshop helps leaders understand the value of QI, how it differs from other forms of change and what leadership behaviours support sustained improvement at team and organisational level.

Through interactive exercises, case critiques, data interpretation activities and coaching practice, leaders explore how their routines, decisions and behaviours influence whether improvement takes hold or stalls. The session blends theory with practical application, giving leaders the confidence to support teams to improve the issues that matter most.

Session outcomes

  • Building a shared understanding of why QI matters, how it differs from assurance and traditional project management, and why some change approaches repeatedly fail
  • Reflecting on leadership behaviours and system factors that can unintentionally make improvement harder
  • Exploring leadership actions that enable QI, including effective problem framing, distinguishing operational from improvement leadership, strengthening psychological safety and aligning improvement to strategic priorities
  • Reviewing real examples of improvement work to analyse what supports effective testing and learning
  • Practising interpretation of run charts and SPC charts through applied exercises and scenarios
  • Developing capability in leading improvement conversations using a coaching-based approach that promotes curiosity rather than rescue
  • Applying learning through role-play scenarios based on real QI challenges Identifying practical commitments to embed new leadership behaviours and strengthen improvement across teams
